Children are expected to:
- read with some fluency and demonstrate comprehension of grade appropriate materials
- use strategies before reading and viewing, including accessing prior knowledge to make connections; making predictions; asking questions; setting a purpose
- read and reread just right texts independently for 15 -20 minutes daily for enjoyment and to increase fluency and comprehension
- view and demonstrate comprehension of visual texts (signs, illustrations, diagrams)

Spelling

Writing
Children are expected to:
- write 6-10 sentences related to a given topic
- demonstrate neat printing skills and be able to cursive write all the lower case letters
- use periods and capitals appropriately
- use strategies before writing, including: setting a purpose; identifying an audience and participating in developing class generated criteria
Speaking and Listening
Children are expected to use speaking and listening to interact with others for the purpose of:
- contributing to a class goal, exchanging ideas on a topic, making connections completing tasks
- listening attentively for a variety of purposes
- demonstrating comprehension by: retelling information; following 3 and 4 step directions; asking for clarification and explanation; sharing connections made
Math
The program we are using primarily is Nelson Math Focus
This term we have focused on:
- number sequences forward and backward from 0 to 1000 by: 2's, 5's, 10's using any starting point
- illustrating concretely and pictorially the meaning of place value for numbers to 1000
- applying mental mathematics strategies, such as : using doubles, doubles plus or minus 1, making 10, thinking addition for subtraction to recall basic addition facts to 18 and related subtraction facts
- understanding of increasing, decreasing and repeating patterns by: describing, extending, comparing and creating patterns using manipulatives and diagrams
- comparing and ordering numbers from least to greatest
- estimation
- addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers with regrouping
- problem solving
With the help of our class snails the children were able to:
- classify animals according to similarities and differences in appearance, behavior, and life cycles
- describe ways in which animals are important to other living things and the environment
- demonstrate a sense of responsibility and caring for our environment
- ask relevant questions that fostered investigations to our studies on snails and salmon
Socials
Our focus for this first term was on:
- distinguishing their roles, rights and responsibilities within the classroom and school
- describing how decisons are made in groups, the classroom, and the school
- identifying a variety of symbolic representations of Canada
- a basic understanding of leadership in our community and country
Physical Education (taught by Mrs. Jumaga)
- listening to and following instructions, staying on task
- demonstrate safe behaviors, following gym rules, sportsmanship, active participation, and effort
- cooperative games, fair play, partnering up, positive behaviors
- locomotive skills: jogging, running, sprinting, starting and stopping positions, dodging, directional changes, and spatial awareness
- volleyball skill development: ready position, forearm pass, underhand serve, basic rules, lead up games
- identify choices to be more active identify and explain factors that contribute to positive experiences in different physical activities
Fine Arts
The children this term have:
- created images based on themes, places, and events discussed in the classroom
- used a variety of materials and techniques to produce creative works
- demonstrated respect for the contributions of others
- through weekly singing and movement experiences with Mrs. Smart been introduced to maintaining a steady beat within common metres, identifying changes in pitch, using singing to reproduce melodies and are learning note values and note names
Health and Career Education
Our focus this term has been on:
- demonstrating an appreciation for personal attributes, skills and successes
- identifying various ways to respond to and solve problems
- understanding the "Traffic Light" poster which outlines the performance standards for our school community
